When my father was in London for his birthday weekend, we spent a day in Cambridge, which is about an hour away by train from London. It’s an important city for my family as it’s where my parents got married, where I was born and where I went to university. Here are some images which capture our walk down memory lane…
Empezamos el día por visitar visitar Magdalene College, donde hice la carrera. Después de pasar un rato en Magdalene College, fuimos a pie hacia el centro de la ciudad, a través de pasar por The Round Church y The Cambridge Union Society. El nombre entero de The Round Church es la Church of the Holy Sepulchre (la Iglesia de Santo Sepulcro de Jerusalén) y es una de cuatro iglesias medievales circulares que todavía se puede visitar en Inglaterra. Justo al lado de la iglesia está The Cambridge Union Society, que es la sociedad de debate más grande en Cambridge y la más vieja en el mundo donde los miembros pueden asistir discursos de oradores de talla mundial y debates. We started off the day at Magdalene College, where I studied my undergraduate degree. After spending some time at Magdalene College, we walked towards the centre of the city, via The Round Church and The Cambridge Union Society. The Round Church‘s full name is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and it is one of four medieval round churches still in use in England. Just next to it is The Cambridge Union Society, Cambridge’s largest debate society and the oldest one in the world where members can see world-class speakers and debates. During my time at Cambridge, I remember seeing the actors John Malkovich and Gillian Anderson speaking at the Union, as well as British politicians such as Michael Howard and Ann Widdecombe.
Luego giramos hacia Trinity Street, a lo largo de la cual se encuentran unos de los colleges más ricos de la universidad: St John’s College, Trinity College y Gonville & Caius College. Continuando en King’s Parade, se encuentra el famoso King’s College. Son unos de los 31 colleges que constituyen la universidad. We then turned onto Trinity Street, along which you can find some of the richest colleges in the university: St John’s College, Trinity College and Gonville & Caius College. Continuing on King’s Parade is the famous King’s College. They are some of the 31 constituent colleges of the university. Each college has its own colours, which you can see in their merchandise, but the colour of the university is the colour which I’m using for the English text in this article (sea green).
Al otro lado de la ciudad hay varios otros colleges, por ejemplo uno de los dos colleges para los posgraduados (como mi amiga, Tatiana), Darwin College, y el famoso Queens’ College con su Mathematical Bridge. Teniendo amigos en varios colleges fue una manera estupenda para mí de conocer un poco la cultura y las tradiciones de otros colleges.
And at the other end of the city there are a number of other colleges, such as one of the university’s two colleges for post-graduates (like my friend, Tatiana), Darwin College, and the famous Queens’ College with its Mathematical Bridge. Having friends at various colleges was a great way for me to sample the culture and traditions of other colleges.
Cambridge es un lugar fantástico para la comida y bebida, aun más así que cuando vivíamos y cuando estuve estudiante allí. Desafortunadamente, mi padre y yo no tuvimos bastante tiempo para probar todo, pero os recomiendo sitios como el Galleria Restaurant y The Pickerel Inn (que existe desde 1608) al lado de Magdalene College, Cambridge Fudge Kitchen en frente de King’s College, y Harriet’s Tearooms a la orilla de Trinity Street.
Cambridge is a fantastic place for food and drink, even more so than when we used to live there and when I was a student. Unfortunately, my father and I didn’t have enough time to try everything, but I recommend places such as the Galleria Restaurant and The Pickerel Inn (which has been around since 1608) next to Magdalene College,Cambridge Fudge Kitchen opposite King’s College, and Harriet’s Tearooms off Trinity Street.
Pero un lugar que mis padres tienen en mucha estima es Fitzbillies. Su nombre suena como el apodo del nombre del museo cerca: The Fitzwilliam Museum. Desde 1921 han utilizado la misma receta para hacer los famosos Chelsea buns de Fitzbillies y la receta es una secreta bien protegida, hecha a mano. Cada año se hace más de 100,000 Chelsea buns. A mi padre le gustan también los bollitos de frutas. Pero se vende también comida más elegante, como la tarta nupcial que vimos en el escaparate, y se puede cenar y comer en el restaurante.
But a place which my parents hold dear to their hearts is Fitzbillies. Its name sounds like the nickname of the museum nearby: The Fitzwilliam Museum. Since 1921 they’ve been using the same recipe to make the famous Fitzbillies Chelsea buns and the recipe is a closely guarded secret, made by hand. Each year they make more than 100,000 Chelsea buns. My father also likes the fruit scones. But they also sell more elegant fare, such as the wedding cake which we saw in the shop window, and you can have dinner and lunch in the restaurant.
Yendo de paseo con el centro de la ciudad detrás de nosotros, pasamos por la University Library. Este edificio art decó es la biblioteca central de la universidad, y añade otro recurso a las bibliotecas proveídas por las facultades y los colleges. Otro recurso muy útil de la universidad es el University Centre, que es como un palacio de congresos, donde hay muchas ferias de empleo. Cerca de allí hay una de las dos estaciones de chalana de Cambridge (desde la cual creo mi amiga, Madeleine, tuvo la oportunidad de experimentar una excursión de la ciudad por chalana, cuando visitó a Cambridge en el tiempo un poco más caliente).
As we walked away from the city centre, we passed by the University Library. This art deco building is the university’s central library, which adds another resource to the libraries provided by various faculties and the colleges. Another very useful resource at the university is the University Centre, which is like a conference centre, where there are many careers fairs. Nearby is one of the two punting stations in Cambridge (from which I think my friend, Madeleine, had the opportunity to experience a punting tour of the city, when she visited Cambridge in slightly warmer weather).
Luego fuimos al Sidgwick Site. Puesto que fue el fin de semana estaba muy tranquilo, pero las facultades como de Derecho, Historia, Filología y Literatura Inglesa están basadas allí. Allí tenía muchas clases, seminarios y exámenes – ¡a lo mejor no son mis memorias favoritas!
We then moved on to visit Sidgwick Site. As it was a weekend, it was very quiet, but this is where faculties such as Law, History, Modern & Medieval Languages and English Literature are based. This was also where I had many of my lectures, supervisions and exams – perhaps not my favourite memories!
Finalmente, tuvimos la oportunidad de ver a unos estudiantes de ahora celebrando la ceremonia graduación de másteres en frente del Senate House, como yo cuando me licencié. Una conclusión perfecta de un día perfecto lleno de buenos recuerdos.
Finally, we had the opportunity to see some current students celebrating their MA ceremony at the Senate House, just as I did when I graduated. A perfect end to a perfect day full of fond memories.
