The Small Fry Cafe – Scarborough, North Yorkshire

El sábado por la tarde llegué a Scarborough, donde viven mis padres y donde yo crecí, para empezar las vacaciones de Navidad.  ¿Y adivinad dónde comí para empezar las vacaciones?  Sí, en uno de mis lugares preferidos en Yorkshire, The Small Fry Cafe (‘Small Fry’), que se especializa en el plato típico de la costa británica – fish and chips (pescado con patatas fritas).

On Saturday afternoon I arrived in Scarborough, where my parents live and where I grew up, to start the Christmas holidays.  And guess where I ate to start the holidays?  Yes, at one of my favourite places in Yorkshire, The Small Fry Cafe (‘Small Fry’), which specialises in the typical, British seaside dish – fish and chips.

Karen y Jane heredaron Small Fry de su padre hace muchos años y mi familia ha sido clientes habituales desde hace diez años.  La combinación ganadora de Small Fry de comida saborosa de verdadera buena calidad, con el servicio que os hace sentir como estar parte de una familia, y precios asequibles, eclipsa a los otros restaurants o cafés de fish and chips de más o menos pretensión o fama.  Y como todos los sitios estupendos que tienen éxito con un encanto modesto, Small Fry no se encuentra en el camino transitado ni en la ruta turística de Scarborough que es la banda costera… Se halla en North Street – no es una calle muy pintoresca de esta ciudad, ¡pero madre mía, la comida tan buena y de esta calidad en Small Fry atrae muy rápido a la gente!

Karen and Jane inherited Small Fry from their father quite a few years ago and my family have been regular customers for the past ten years.  Small Fry’s winning combination of genuinely good, tasty food together with service akin to making you feel part of the family, at very reasonable prices, outshines all other fish and chip cafes or restaurants of greater or lesser pretence or repute.  Like all great places which succeed with an unassuming charm, Small Fry is slightly off the beaten track and isn’t found along the usual tourist route of Scarborough’s foreshore…  It’s actually situated on North Street – not a particularly picturesque part of the town, but my goodness the taste and quality of the food at Small Fry soon draws in the crowds!

Esta vez  decidí en pedir uno de mis platos preferidos, scampi and chips (langostinos rebozados con patatas fritas), con puré de guisantes para compartir con mis padres.  De alguna manera logré refrenar la gula y pedí solo media ración de patatas fritas, ¡pero me arrepentí de haber tomado esa decision al disfrutar de comer la última patata frita con unas gotitas de vinagre!  Las patatas fritas de Small Fry de verdad son las estrellitas de esta café – de algun modo logran tener un buen equilibro de un exterior crujiente con un interior casi de puré.  Y por cierto tenemos que elogiar el puré de guisantes.  Antes de comer en Small Fry, no me apetecía mucho la idea de pedir un cuenco de menjunje verde.  Pero el puré de guisantes de Small Fry está tan cremoso y casi dulce que de verdad completa con perfección los otros platos.

This time I decided to order one of my favourite dishes, scampi and chips, with some mushy peas for the table to share.  I somehow managed to rein in my greed and order just a half portion of chips, but I was very regretful of that decision when it came to enjoying my last chip coated with a touch of vinegar!  The chips at Small Fry really are the little stars of this café – they somehow manage to achieve the right balance of a crispy exterior with an almost mushy exterior.  And the mushy peas really do have to be lauded as well.  Before I ate at Small Fry, the thought of ordering a bowl of green goo didn’t really appeal to me.  But the mushy peas at Small Fry are so creamy and almost sweet – they really do round off the dishes here to perfection.

De hecho no suele gustarme el plato de pescado con patatas fritas, pero la masa de Small Fry está tan crujiente con tanto sabor, que es irresistible.  No se pega de una manera pastosa al pescado, pero parece encerrar con delicatez el pescado.  El pescado está cojido cada mañana por los pescadores locales.  Aquí en Gran Bretaña la gente suele pedir bacalao, que suelgo pedir en Small Fry, cada vez que pido el pescado con patatas fritas, entonces sí, ¡soy culpable por la reducción de la población de bacalao, como muchos otros británicos!  Pero mis padres suelen pedir abadejo, que también sabe muy rico y la gente se lo pide mucho como bacalao, y tiene un sabor un poco más distintivo que bacalao.  A mi padre le gusta más comer la masa más ligera, pero el sabor tan bueno de la comida de Small Fry por cierto merece engordarse un poquito, aunque Jane y Karen son muy buenas en cuanto a facilitar varias necesidades dietétas tan especificas.

I don’t actually normally like fish and chips, but the batter made at Small Fry is so crispy and tasty, that it’s irresistible.  It doesn’t cling with sogginess to the fish, but seems to delicately encase the fish, which is freshly caught every morning by local fishermen.  In Britain, people usually order cod, which is what I usually order at Small Fry, whenever I have fish and chips here, so yes, I’m guilty like many other Brits of the depleting cod population!  But my parents tend to order haddock, which just as yummy and ordered in almost equal measure, with a slightly more distinctive taste than cod.  My father prefers to have his fish lightly battered, but the tastiness of the food at Small Fry is certainly worth putting on a few cheeky pounds, even though Jane and Karen are very good at catering for such specific dietary requests!

Esta vez se adornaban las seis  pequeñas mesas en el café con acebo, así que añade un toque de Navidad a la comida. Y al final de la comida, se sirven unos chocolates gratis en un platito mono de forma de un árbol de Navidad.

This time, the six little tables in the café were decked with holly, adding a festive touch to the meal.  And to round off the meal, they served complimentary chocolates in a cute, little dish in the shape of a Christmas tree.

Tengo mucha esperenza de que podaís disfrutar de este tesoro escondido de Scarborough mientras que las hermanas Holmes sigan poniendo la mágia en el plato humilde de pescado/ langostinos rebozados con patatas fritas.

I very much hope you get to enjoy this hidden gem of Scarborough whilst the Holmes sisters continue to put the magic into the humble fish/ scampi and chips.
