My father and I were in Cambridge for the day last weekend, so it made sense for us to spend some time at Magdalene College, where I studied my undergraduate degree almost fifteen years ago.  Here’s a brief insight into college life, which embellishes College facts with personal memories …

Magdalene College fue fundado en 1428.  En comparación con los otros colleges medievales que constituyen la Universidad de Cambridge, es uno de los colleges más pequeños y acogedores de aquella época, y es uno de los colleges más tradicionales.  Por ejemplo, no admitiera a las mujeres hasta 1988, siendo el último college de hacerlo – un momento caracterizado por los hombres llevando brazaletes negros e izando la bandera a media asta (sin comentarios…).

Magdalene College was established in 1428. Compared to other medieval constituent colleges of Cambridge University, it is one of the smaller and cosier colleges of that era, and is one of the more traditional colleges.  For example, it was not until 1988 that the College, the last one to do so, admitted women – a moment marked by incumbent male undergraduates by wearing black armbands and flying the College flag at half-mast (no comment).

 

Originalmente, Magdalene College se llamó Buckingham College, hasta que fue refundado en 1542, en gran parte por Thomas, Lord Audley, Lord Chancellor bajo el Rey Enrique VIII.  Al refundir el college, se lo dedicó a la Santa María Magdalena, y de hecho su nombre entero es The College of St Mary Magdalene.

Magdalene College was originally named Buckingham College until it was refounded in 1542, largely by Thomas, Lord Audley, Lord Chancellor under Henry VIII.  At its refoundation, the College was dedicated to St Mary Magdalene, and its full name is in fact The College of St Mary Magdalene. 

No obstante, quizá la elección del nombre de María Magdalena fue una elección egoísta, puesto que los primeros documentos notan que se deletrea el nombre según cómo se suponía pronunciarlo: ‘Maudleyn’ (suena como ‘Módlin’ en español), es decir, con el nombre de Lord Audley.  Además, la última letra ‘e’ de Magdalene fue un intento de distinguir el college de su college hermano en Oxford, Magdalen.  El escudo de armas de Magdalene, con el lema de «Garde ta foy» («mantén tu fe») y el blasón mostrando el dragón heráldico (ahora el señal de unos de los círculos estudiantiles del college, The Wyverns), son también todos derivados de Audley.  Los colores del college son lavanda y añil, como los colores de texto usado en este artículo, y que se ve en muchas de las mercancías del college.

However, the choice of Mary Magdalene was probably an egotistical one, as early documents record that the name is spelt as it was meant to be pronounced: ‘Maudleyn’, i.e. containing the name of Lord Audley.  The final ‘e’ on Magdalene was also an attempt to distinguish the College from its sister college in Oxford, Magdalen.  The arms of Magdalene, with the motto «Garde ta foy» («Keep faith») and the crest showing the mythic wyvern (now the symbol of one of the College’s drinking societies, The Wyverns), are also all derived from Audley.  The College colours are lavender and indigo, similar to the font colours used in this blog post, and which you’ll see in various College merchandise. 

Uno de los alumnos más famosos del College es Samuel Pepys, famoso por su diario en el que tomó nota de eventos históricos como el Gran Peste y el Gran Incendio de Londres.  Pepys donó su biblioteca personal al college en 1703 y ahora es una de las imágenes icónicas del college y situada en el Second Court.  Desafortunadamente está prohibido sacar fotos dentro de la Pepys Library, pero es una colección fenomenal de más de 3000 libros de la colección personal de Pepys.  La fachada de la biblioteca provee un fondo hermoso a acontecimientos como las recepciones al aire libre para celebrar la entrega de título.

One of the College’s most famous alumnus is Samuel Pepys, famed for his diary which recorded historical events such as the Great Plague of London and the Great Fire of London.  Pepys bequeathed his personal library to the College in 1703 and is now one of the iconic images of the College and situated in Second Court.  Unfortunately you cannot take photos inside Pepys Library, but it is a fascinating collection of over 3000 books of Pepys’ personal collection.  The exterior of the library also provides a beautiful backdrop to events such as graduation garden parties.

Justo detrás de la Pepys Library está el jardin de los Fellows (miembros de la junta de gobierno del college) que conduce al paseo al lado del rio.  Cuando está en plena flor en primavera y en verano, es un lugar hermoso para varios acontecimientos, como bodas y bodas civiles. 

Just behind Pepys Library is the Fellows Garden which leads onto the Riverside Walk.  When in full bloom in spring and summer, its a beautiful venue for various events, such as weddings and civil ceremonies.

Hay dos otros acontecimientos muy importantes para los estudiantes del college: la cena de gala y los bailes bienales que se llaman el Magdalene May Ball.  Casi cada noche hay la cena de gala durante los trimestres para los estudiantes y sus invitados y consta de tres platos muy asequibles (vino no está incluido).  Estando de acuerdo con la cultura tradicional del college, Magdalene es el único college de Oxbridge que realiza cenas de gala con velas (sin ninguna luz eléctrica).  Recientemente pero antes de empezar este blog, fui a una cena de gala al college como alumna, con mi amiga, Ceci, y tuvimos la suerte cenar por las velas en la mesa de las profesores – un h0nor preservado por los alumnos visitantes o los posgraduados y sus invitados.

Two other very special events for students at the college are formal hall and the biennial Magdalene May Ball.  Formal hall is held almost every night during term-time for students and their guests and consists of a very reasonably-priced three-course dinner (not including wine).  In keeping with its traditional culture, Magdalene is unique in Oxbridge for only holding candlelit formal hall dinners.  I recently but pre-dating this blog dined as an alumna at the College with my friend, Ceci, and we were fortunate to dine by candlelight at High Table – an honour preserved for visiting alumni or post-graduates and their guests. 

A menudo el salón también provee uno de varios lugares para el Magdalene May Ball.  El Magdalene May Ball es uno de los bailes estudiantiles de Cambridge más tradicional y decadente puesto que todavía insiste en ir de etiqueta con pajarita blanca y no hay ningún tema del baile, no como los bailes de otros colleges.  Cuando trabajé en el comité del Magdalene May Ball de 2002 y 2003, mantuvimos la tradición de vender entradas sólo con cena (no con la opción de no cenar, que es más barato), que costaron £210 por dos invitados en aquella época – ¡sí que los Magdalene May Balls son pródigos de verdad!

The Hall also often provides one of the multiple settings of the Magdalene May Ball.  Magdalene May Ball is one of the most traditional and decadent Cambridge student balls as it continues to insist on a white-tie dress code and there is no theme set, unlike many other colleges’ May Balls.  When I was on the Magdalene May Ball Committee between 2002 and 2003, we also upheld the tradition of selling only dining tickets, which at the time cost £210 for two guests – yes, Magdalene May Balls really are lavish!

Al otro lado de Magdalene Street y enfrente de First Court y Second Court, está ‘The Village’ (‘el pueblo’).  Mi cuarto y unas clases estuvieron allí por la mayoría de mis estudios de título (salvo el año que viví en Madrid). Como los otros colleges de Cambridge, Magdalene College provee habitaciones a los estudiantes ambos dentro del college (es decir First Court, Second Court, el recién construido Cripps Court y The Village), y fuera de sus límites, por ejemplo al lado de Quayside y en Thompson’s Lane.  Cuando estuve estudiante con el college, me han dicho que el college alquila los edificios debajo de los cuartos estudiantiles a las tiendas y los restaurantes, que es muy común en Cambridge, puesto que muchos de los colleges son propietarios de varias partes de la ciudad, y más allá… 

On the other side of Magdalene Street, opposite First Court and Second Court, is ‘The Village’.  This is where my accommodation and some supervisions were located for most of my degree (apart from the year I spent in Madrid).  Like other colleges at Cambridge, Magdalene College provides accommodation to its students both within College (i.e. First Court, Second Court, the recently built Cripps Court, and ‘The Village’) as well as beyond its boundaries, such as along Quayside and Thompson’s Lane.  Whilst at the College, I was told that the shops and restaurants underneath the student accommodation are rented out to those various businesses by the College, which is very common for many other Cambridge colleges, as they own various parts of the city, and beyond…

Magdalene se halla en el centro de Cambridge, hacía el norte de la ciudad, al lado del River Cam en Magdalene Street.  Se puede visitarlo a pie, por bici, o por chalana, se halla al lado de una de las dos paradas de chalana en Cambridge.  Visitar el college, de verdad es como hacer un paso atrás en el tiempo, puesto que lleva más de 550 años de historia.  ¡Buen viaje!

Magdalene is situated by in the centre of Cambridge, towards the north, beside the River Cam on Magdalene Street.  It can be visited by foot, bike or punt and is situated beside one of the two punting stations in Cambridge.  Visiting the College, really is like stepping back in time, as it has over 550 years of history.  Enjoy your visit!
