Lyon – city of French food and more

Lyon es más de una ciudad de comida francesa.  Como descubrimos mi madre y yo, hay unos lugares impresionantes de interés turístico para visitar, empezando con le Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière.

Lyon is more than just a city of French food.  As my mum and I discovered, there are some stunning sights to see, starting with the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière.

Situada hacia el oeste de Lyon arriba la colina de Fourvière, se ve la Basilica en la distancia desde casi todo el resto de la ciudad.  Se la construyó entre 1872 y 1884, y fue incluida en el patrimonio de la UNESCO en 1998.  La Chapelle de la Vierge, situada hacia la izquierda de la Basilica, se identifica sin problema por la estatua dorada de la Virgen María que la corona.

Situated towards the west of Lyon on top of the Fourvière Hill, the Basilica can be seen in the distance from most of the rest of the city.  It was built between 1872 and 1884, and became a UNESCO heritage site in 1998.  The Chapelle de la Vierge, situated to the left of the Basilica, is easily identified by the golden statute of Mary which tops it.

De hecho la Basilica consiste de dos iglesias – una fue construida encima de la otra.  El santuario inferior, mostrado en las fotos arriba, es lo más sencillo de los dos, en cuanto al diseño.

The Basilica actually consists of two churches – one is built on top of the other.  The lower sanctuary, shown in the photos above, is the simpler of the two in terms of design.

Al contrario, el santuario superior fue diseñado de una manera tan ornada que deja a uno sin habla al entrarlo.

The upper sanctuary, by contrast, is designed in such an ornate manner that it takes your breath away when you step inside.

Al andar dentro el santuario superior, se ve inmediatamente que la Basilica toma elementos de la arquitectura románica y bizantina.

As you walk through the upper sanctuary, you can immediately see that the Basilica draws on Romanesque and Byzantine architecture. 

Y desde la Basilica se ve vistas de largo alcance del resto de la ciudad, de las cuales la vista más inmediata es la de la Catedral de Lyon (Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon, en francés).  Este edificio gótico fue construido en 1480 en honor a San Juan Bautista.

And from the Basilica you can see far-stretching views of the rest of the city, most immediately of Lyon Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon, in French).  This Gothic building was completed in 1480 and is dedicated to Saint Jean the Baptist.

La Catedral de Lyon está ubicado en el centro de Vieux Lyon – un lugar perfecto para tomar una pausa de pasteles de hacer el turismo.  Mi madre y yo disfrutamos un crepe típico francés de azúcar, limon y mantequilla, y un macaron de pistacho, con té, en el Café Bar de la Ficelle, justo fuera de la parada de metro, Vieux Lyon.

Lyon Cathedral is located in the heart of Vieux Lyon – a perfect place to take a cake-break from sightseeing.  My mum and I enjoyed a typical French crepe of sugar, lemon and butter, and a pistachio macaroon, with some tea, at the Café Bar de la Ficelle, right outside Vieux Lyon metro station. 

Por la noche, la ciudad se ilumina de una manera tan hermosa, sobre todo en Place des Terreaux, donde se ve la Fontaine Bartholdi y el Ayuntamiento de Lyon.  Auguste Bartholdi, el escultor de Fontaine Bartholdi, hizo también la Estatua de Libertad en Nueva York.  La Fontaine Bartholdi fue construido en 1889 y se lo erigió en 1892 en la Place des Terreaux.

And by night, the city is beautifully illuminated, especially around Place des Terraux, where you can see the Fontaine Bartholdi and Lyon City Hall.  Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor who made Fontaine Bartholdi, is the same sculptor behind the Statue of Liberty in New York.  The Fontaine Bartholdi was built in 1889 and erected in Place des Terraux in 1892.

Lyon no tiene mucha fama por los museos, la arquitectura ni el paisaje, no como otras ciudades del mundo, pero merece la pena visitar unos de los lugares de interés turístico, ¡como poco para dar un paseo para bajar la comida ofrecida en esta ciudad!

Lyon isn’t particularly famed for its museums, architecture or landscape, unlike other cities in the world, but it is still worth seeing some its sights, not least to walk off all the food that the city has to offer!
